Delta 8 FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s get right down and dirty — what is delta 8 THC? We’re glad you asked. Delta 8 THC, also known more plainly as delta 8 or even d8, also comes from Cannabis sativa, or the hemp plant. As you can imagine, when you look at delta 8 THC on a chemical level, it’s only slightly different than delta 9 THC. Delta 9 THC is the infamous, well-known psychoactive commonly referred to simply as “THC.” This makes delta 8 what we call an isomer. An isomer is a fancy term to describe chemical similarity, meaning delta 8’s striking similarity to delta 9.

But what about that other cannabinoid we mentioned, CBD? How does delta 8 relate to CBD? Like CBD, delta 8 is more available than ever. They’re both exciting in their own way. However, depending on who you are, you may find that one works for you better than the other. Or, perhaps, you find that CBD and delta 8 fit into your routine in harmony, just for different purposes. In fact, using more than one type of cannabinoid product can only work in your favor, due to the way that your body uses them. We’ll discuss the benefits of delta 8 and how it makes you feel later on.

If that last point has you thinking about your endocannabinoid system, you’re a winner. So how does this work? Why are our bodies so responsive to multiple cannabinoids? When you introduce more than one cannabinoid or terpene profile at a time, you’re more likely to tap into what’s called the entourage effect. Basically, you’re allowing all of your body’s endocannabinoid receptors to wake up and get moving all at once. The endocannabinoid system — something that’s present in all vertebrates — helps regulate tons of different bodily processes. This includes things like pain, mood, appetite, and more. Basically, your endocannabinoid system deals with everything that can help your body achieve homeostasis or an overall sense of balance.

Now that you know what delta 8 is — and are perhaps a little bit excited about it — let’s discuss perhaps the most exciting part: delta 8 THC is federally legal. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill that created a surge in hemp farming (and thus, CBD products) delta 8 is also allowed to shine. The greater availability of delta 8 is made possible through sophisticated extraction, isolation, conversion, and refinement techniques. The hemp plant only produces a small amount naturally.

So, what’s the catch? In order to remain legal, just like CBD products, the delta 9 THC content in any delta 8 product has to test below the legal limit of 0.3%. Furthermore, as outlined by the Farm Bill, all derivatives, isomers, and cannabinoids in hemp are legal provided that the final products contain less than 0.3% delta 9 THC.

This may cause you to wonder if a lack of delta 9 THC means a lack of physical or cognitive effects. Does that mean that delta 8 THC doesn’t get you high? Negative. But it’s a different high. Delta 8 is considered psychotropic, which has the same essential meaning as psychoactive: something that affects the mind. We’ll get more into this in the next section.

Rather than being viewed solely as a legal alternative to delta 9 THC, delta 8 deserves more credit than that. In fact, according to early studies — we’re talking decades ago — as well as the National Cancer Institute, delta 8 can offer some powerful symptomatic relief. Therefore, delta 8 has powerful potential in the medical field, not just the recreational one. So what kinds of symptoms can delta 8 offer relief from? This includes, but isn’t limited to:

  • Anxiety
  • Appetite regulation or promotion
  • Nausea
  • Pain

Relief of these symptoms specifically can also be found with delta 9 THC. And, this makes sense, since delta 8 and delta 9 are so similar. The legality of delta 8 is great news for those who have chronic illnesses or who are undergoing harsh treatments like chemotherapy. After all, some people who may be in the greatest need for relief from these symptoms may not be able to access medical marijuana.

Before we discuss how delta 8 makes you feel, let’s cover the last few things it may help with, according to research:

  • Libido (sex drive)
  • Hangovers
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
  • Menstrual cramps

We just talked about delta 8’s great potential for specific symptom relief. But beyond that, what kind of experience does delta 8 offer for those who take it for other reasons? What is a delta 8 high like?

Many people report that a delta 8 high is both uplifting and calming. Depending on associated strains or terpenes, some users report a unique level of focus. The most consistent way to describe the high from delta 8 is that it offers full-body effects, or a “body high.” Of course, delta 8 will affect you differently depending on your body system. It will also depend on how much you take, how you take it, and what strains and terpenes are present.

As you may know for yourself, the effects offered by delta 8 are very different from the mild calming or even non-existent effects CBD users may experience. So, if you’ve ever wondered if CBD creates a body high, the answer is no, at least for the overwhelming majority. If you disagree, it may just be the simple fact that CBD is working for you in other ways.

As we’ve already discussed, delta 8 is a relative of both CBD and THC. And, furthermore, delta 8 offers more potent feelings and effects than CBD but less potent than THC. So, if you’ve been on a consistent CBD regimen for quite some time and haven’t found the right CBD product for you, it may be time to consider delta 8. Of course, you should consult a health professional prior to adding any type of supplement to your routine.
